Bar Harbor — Lucy Nicolar Poolaw, the subject of a new exhibit at the Abbe Museum, was a Penobscot Indian famous in her time for performing generic Indian dances and rituals grounded more in popular stereotypes than any specific Penobscot customs. Traveling across the country in the early 20th century, Poolaw would dress in Plains-style headdresses, performing in Wild West-themed reenactments under the stage name, “Princess Watahwaso.”
